Mr. Sastre is a technical reviewer at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the Office of New Reactors. For the last four years, he has been the lead chemical engineer for the review of new reactor applications. In this role, he has reviewed all major reactor designs and license applications, written regulatory guidance and presented his safety findings to the NRC Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards and the Commission. As part of his responsibilities, Mr. Sastre has served as an NRC representative to OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency’s (NEA’s) Working Group on the Regulation of New Reactors (WGRNR). As a member of WGRNR, Mr. Sastre has been responsible for writing NEA published reports comparing international processes for licensing new reactors, and presenting on this topic at international workshops and conferences. Before joining the NRC Office of New Reactors, Mr. Sastre held positions as an import/export licensing officer at the NRC Office of International Programs and as a regional inspector of nuclear reactor safety at the NRC’s regional office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Mr. Sastre received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico and is completing his master’s degree in International Energy Policy at George Washington University.
