Type: National Research Program in Energy under the topic "Sustainable Energy Infrastructure and Market"
Agreement No: VPP-EM-INFRA-2018/1-0003
Duration: 2019 - 2021
Project Leader: Institute of Power Engineering of Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University, Dr. sc. ing. Laila Zemīte
Project partners:
- Institute of Heating, Gas and Water Technologies (RTU),
- Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL)
Total budget: 472 440 EUR
ISSP UL budget: 80 000 EUR
Project description:
A project objective is to improve the operation efficiency and reliability of the natural gas supply, storage, distribution, and processing system.
The tasks of ISSP UL are connected with WP5 “Assessment of Hydrogen Extraction Technologies by Resource, Energy Consumption, Cost, Flexibility and Expansion”
The project will analyse the role of hydrogen in energy transport and storage nowadays and in the future. Hydrogen production technologies, including biohydrogen and their suitability for Latvian resources and conditions will be evaluated. Synthetic methane production technologies from renewable energy sources using on-site CO2 emissions and hydrogen as input will be evaluated. Prospects for the use of the existing natural gas pipeline and storage systems for hydrogen will be analysed, taking into account possible increases in hydrogen production and utilization. The possibility of adapting existing facilities for partial or full transport and storage of hydrogen will be considered.
The main results of the project will be reflected in scientific publications and recommendations to policy makers.
