Project title: IImprovement of universal augmented reality head-mounted displays by responsiveness boost of Liquid Crystal device by 3-Dimensional electrode layout (LC3D)

Project aim:
The project will optimize the electrode structure of liquid crystal displays, including modeling the electromagnetic and optical properties of thin films. Prototype devices, including electronic control systems, will be manufactured at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia, as well as new measurement systems that surpass those currently used will be developed.

Idea behind the project is to use three-dimension electrode structure to generate the secondary electric field having a potential to speed up cholesteric liquid crystal (LC) switching from a transparent to light scattering state, which normally happens through relaxation upon primary field removal and is primarily determined by properties of LC composition

Expected scientific results:
Due to requirements of uniform switching across the area of a display device and excellent optical transmission, the design and implementation of the electrode structure is highly challenging, thus being the prime focus of the project proposal.

The project will involve optimization of the electrode structure consisting of thin films by electro-magnetic and optical modelling, fabrication of prototype devices as well as development of electronic driver and response measurement system surpassing current devices. The proposed subject of the study is expected to have a significant importance in the field of information and communication technology, particularly, in development and implementation of augmented reality head mounted displays. Augmented reality displays are becoming a must have for modern professional users, such as specialized vehicle operators, medics or technicians that require visual information at a near eye distance without diverting attention from the environment within a region of interest.
