For last two decades the Institute of Solid State Physics of University of Latvia (ISSP UL) in collaboration with Latvian chemists has been involved in development and investigation of novel functional organic materials. This material research is focused on potential applications in the field of photonics. Unfortunately, assessment of developed materials in photonic devices was unworkable at ISSP UL up till now due to lack of prototyping tools. Recent enhancements in the available technology provide an opportunity to implement the materials into optical elements useful for photonic integrated circuits (PIC).
Within the proposed project application assessment of these unique organic materials developed and investigated in Latvia is planned by working out prototypes of following elements for PICs:
- an organic solid-state laser operating in the red part of the visible light spectra;
- organic waveguide electro-optical modulators operating in the visible and infrared part of the light spectra;
- organic thermoelectric red and infrared light sensor compatible with organic waveguide components.
This project will be the next step in establishment of a platform for monolithic integration of all-organic waveguide elements – from light sources to active components and detectors – on optoelectronic chips.
