On February 16th, the ISSP Thin Film Laboratory made great strides in learning and growth by organizing an engaging workshop at their facility. Dr. Alexandr Belosludtsev from the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology in Vilnius was the keynote speaker at this event with presentation on “A review of recent magnetron sputtering developments and optical applications”.

Dr. Belosludtsev's session covered some amazing new developments in various scientific areas like material science, laser tech, optoelectronics, and smart coatings. He also shared useful tips for using magnetron sputtering, which our SWEB research team is looking into right now.

The workshop covered detailed techniques for accurately and quickly applying different materials. It discussed using ultra-thin metals as transparent conductive electrodes and combining metal and dielectric layers in new ways. These developments open up possibilities for creating special laser beam splitters, adjustable sensors, and improved microscopic tools, important for future smart windows.

Attendees had animated conversations about using these technologies to develop more advanced smart window designs. They also looked into how effective ITO and metal layers are as electrodes, as well as the best methods and anticipated results.

The event was a great place to find possible new collaborations. They talked about opportunities for joint research in future Horizon Europe projects and forming partnerships between research groups to create a Briefing Demo Center as part of the SWEB project. Dr. Juris Purans also mentioned that they could collaborate through short-term scientific visits and invited Dr. Belosludtsev and colleagues to join a Summer School on Thermochromic, Photochromic, and Electrochromic materials for Smart Windows in June 2024 in Riga.

The workshop is a big step for the ISSP Thin Film Lab as it works towards making zero-energy buildings a reality. The productive talks and excitement about future projects show that the global scientific community is dedicated to sustainability and saving energy.
