This year, five Latvian universities have made it into the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings: the University of Latvia (UL) retains its 101-200th position, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) moves up to the 201-300th position, Riga Technical University (RTU) takes 301-400th position, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) is in the 801-1000th position, while the Institute of Transport and Communications enters the ranking at 1001+.

UL maintains its 101-200th position in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023. This is the highest ranking among universities in the Baltic States. LU is in the top 200 in three ranking categories: gender equality, peace, justice and strong institutions, and decent work and economic growth.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are currently the only international ranking to assess the environmental, economic, and social impact of universities, and are designed to promote sustainable development worldwide.

The ranking evaluates universities by applying the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals framework. To benchmark and measure universities’ contribution, their performance is assessed in four areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

The ranking was first published in 2019, and since then the interest and number of participating universities has grown rapidly every year. In 2021, a total of 1,118 universities were in the ranking, and in 2022 it was already 1,406. This year’s ranking includes 1,591 universities from 112 countries.
