The LTV program "Aculiecinieks (Eyewitness)" on October 15 talks about the development of new technologies – organs on the chip.
In this project, the leading researchers of our institute's Micro and Nano-devices Laboratory Gatis Mozoļevskis and Roberts Rimša successfully cooperate with Artūrs Ābols, a scientist at the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Center. Scientists from both institutes have combined their knowledge to develop and produce organs on a chip – a new high-tech industry. It is called a chip because it uses semiconductor technology – chips just like in phones.
The organs on the chip are a new high-tech industry with huge potential. For example, in pharmacy and medical treatment. Chips are already used when testing the effectiveness of the drug in preclinical studies. In Latvia, they are used in the study of cancer biomarkers. As scientists emphasize, chips do not replace real human organs, but serve as a test model.
