The flow of data transmission is increasing. Higher data rates are required to provide real-time information. Amplification of optical signals plays an important role in increasing the speed of communication systems. Scientists from the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications of Riga Technical University (RTU) in cooperation with partners from the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia (UL) and SIA AFFOC Solutions have developed a prototype broadband optical amplifier to improve the performance of fiber optic communication systems.
In the ERDF project “Development of efficient jacketed fiber optics for telecommunication systems”, using a different alloy fiber and efficient jacket pumping technique, we develop a new type of amplifier for communication systems, such as optical Internet and everything related to data transmission. The amplifier uses a special fiber – the fiber pumped in the sheath has two sheaths, we also use a special cross-sectional shape that resembles a flower.
The approbation of the prototype was performed in cooperation with the RTU HPC Center, which is the largest provider of supercomputers or high-performance computing resources in Latvia. Researchers are continuing to develop the prototype developed in the ERDF project (No. 1.1.1.1/18/A/068) in order to reach a higher level of technological readiness and be able to commercialize it.
