The Open Science Strategy will benefit not only the public, who will be able to more easily access research results and engage in research processes but also businesses and policymakers. Researchers will be able to acquire competencies in research data management, receive support in research data management, and use state-of-the-art digital tools and repositories, thus contributing to the quality, integrity, and productivity of science.
The Open Science Strategy is structured around three pillars:
- Pillar 1 “Open Access to Scientific Publications” describes open access publishing practices and defines a national open access policy. All new scientific publications produced under publicly funded research programs should be made freely available under “green” or “gold” open access without an embargo period.
- Pillar 2 “FAIR Research Data” requires that research data should be open by default and that research data, metadata, and e-infrastructures intended for long-term preservation and re-use should comply as far as possible with FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles.
- Pillar 3 “Public Science” provides for the co-creation-based promotion of public science by providing public science initiatives with information support and access to scientific e-infrastructures (including research data repositories), implementation of public science principles, integration of public science into Latvian science communication activities, and involvement of Latvian participants in international initiatives and networks.
