Nano RAY-T is a Latvian hightech company with strong Technology Platform. The company has developed several applications for using Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and produce all types carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with extremely high purity in 99.5% and stable characteristics.
Nano RAY-T and the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Latvia have implemented a joint ERDF project "Creation of innovative non-binder anodes for lithium-ion batteries", therefore the reactor is currently located in the premises of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Latvia.
Carbon nanotubes have several advantages in Energy storages technologies:
- large specific surface area,
- high conductivity,
- excellent mechanical characteristics,
- high polarizability and the possibility of chemical functionalization to provide better interaction with electrolyte ions,
- high electrochemical capacity,
- high electrical coupling (compared to conventional carbon materials such as activated carbon).
Currently commercial solutions use anode materials with a capacity of about 150 mAh/g. Nano RAY-T electrode material made of carbon nanotubes with metal sulfides allows achieving capacities more than 750 mAh/g.
In 2020, the company together with the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia developed the first laboratory prototype for a lithium-ion battery with vertical carbon nanotubes. Tests with different combinations of other materials are planned to find the best option. The next step will be an industrial prototype that could attract investment to produce material in larger amount.
