On Thursday, May 27, the Saeima ratified the agreement between the Latvian and European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) regarding the granting of the status of CERN associated Member State to Latvia, the Saeima press service said.
The agreement between Latvia and CERN was signed on 14 April this year. It provides that Latvia be granted the status of CERN associated Member State and the right to participate in its scientific program.
It also foresees participation in CERN's training and education programs, continuing and improving the cooperation launched with CERN in 2016. Latvian businessmen will also have the opportunity to participate in CERN procurement.
CERN is a European scientific organization dealing with fundamental physics research and the development of large-scale technology. That organization was established in 1954. CERN currently has 23 Member States, six associated Member States, including Lithuania, and three emerging associated Member States in the accession phase, including Estonia.
