Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) Yearbook 2021 has been published - an overview of the Academy's activities during the year, covering the period from March 2020 to March 2021. In the introductory article Ivars Kalviņš, President of the LAS, shares his thoughts on this challenging period.
The following facts about the ISSP UL have been included in the Yearbook: the opening of the Taiwan and Baltic Physics Research Centre, participation of three teams our institut’s scientists in the EU co-financed Technology Transfer Programme for the commercialization of scientific research, leading researcher’s Dr.phys. Vladimirs Pankratov's report "Synchrotron radiation and fluorescent spectroscopy of functional materials", leading researcher’s Dr.phys. Aivars Vembris report "Applications of light-emitting organic materials” as well as other events and activities.
In 2020, the work of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia and the Institute of Physics of the University of Tartu (Estonia) on the project "Deep understanding and prediction of advanced materials for extreme radiation conditions" was recognized as one of the most significant achievements in the Latvian Science. With the LAS President’s letter of Commendation works of our scientists "New optical and mathematical methods for improving the quality of images" and New synthetic methods in purine chemistry and their application in materials science" were acknowledged.
In 2020, scientists from our institute have received several other awards: leading researcher Dr.phys. Jānis Kleperis received Arturs Balklavs Award for The Promotion of Science, Mg.chem. Ivita Bite was recognized with L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Latvia International Award "For Women in Science", Dr.phys. Edgars Butanovs and Dr.phys. Kaspars Pudžs received Ludvigs and Māris Jansons Award in physics, Dr.phys. Virgīnija Vītola received Young Scientists Award, but leading researcher Dr.phys. Roberts Eglītis - Baltic Assembly Prize in Physics.
