Research "New 0ptical and mathematical methods to improve image quality" carried out by the scientists of the ISSP UL - Dr. phys. Varis Karitans, Dr. phys. Sergejs Fomins, Dr.habil.phys. Maris Ozolins, Mg. Katrina Laganovska and Mg. Karlis Kundzins is among the receivers of the Latvian Academy of Sciences President’s Letter of Commendation in 2020.

Leading researchers from the institute’s Laboratory of Visual Perception Dr.phys. Varis Karitāns and Dr. phys. Sergejs Fomins told about their research in a news story broadcasted during the morning news show “Rīta Panorāma” on national television channel LTV1.

When taking pictures or recording videos in low light, we can very well see how much the picture quality decreases in such moments. ISSP UL’s researchers are involved in solving the problem, looking for innovative methods to improve image quality. In order to materialize the invention, cooperation partners have already been found, which could start its production for use in medium-sized observatories, as well as a simpler version - for amateur astronomers. The invention can also be used to study objects under the human skin and in military cameras, allowing to obtain high-quality images even in the rain.
