Today, while meeting with European Commission's Director General for Research and Innovation Jean Eric Paquet in the Riga Castle, the President of Latvia Egils Levits stressed the role of research and innovation in addressing the major challenges faced by Latvia and the whole Europe.

President and Director General discussed the importance of active participation of all researches in Europe in addressing the major challenges of the European Union (EU) or future mission of the EU, including climate change adaptation un environmental protection, human health and sustainable farming.

President Levits and Director General Paquet agreed that equal participation of researchers from all EU member states is necessary to overcome the common pressing challenges. It is also vital to promote inter-disciplinary approaches and active integration of human and social sciences in applied research.
