On August 23 at 13:00 at the conference room on the 2nd floor of the UL ISSP, Ķengaraga iela 8, Ruslana Balabai (Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, Ukraine) will give a talk entitled “PHOTONIC AND ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES OF LATERAL HETEROSTRUCTURES BASED ON FUNCTIONALIZED GRAPHENE”.

Photonic crystals (PhCs) consist of periodically located particles of materials (sub-materials) with different refractive indices. In this work, lateral heterostructures based on functionalized graphene were considered as PhCs. It is possible due to the periodicity that inherent in these structures. There are periodic alternation areas of pure graphene (C) and functionalized graphene (CH, CF, CCl), which have different dielectric permittivity. Traditionally, the analysis of the photonic properties of the PhCs is made by numerical methods of transmission electromagnetic waves in PhCs. For obtaining coefficients in the dispersion equation it is sufficient to solve the Maxwell equation numerically within a single cell. We offer a different way. The calculation methods used by us that apply the functional of electronic density are a complete universal tool for the study of PhCs. Using the author's code, the spatial distributions of the valence electron density, the distribution of electron states in the valence and conduction bands, dielectric matrices, and macroscopic relative permittivity for PhCs based on grapheme. Also, the simulation on the atomic level of the lateral heterostructures based on functionalized graphene by the method of the functional of electronic density enabled to establish the features of the redistribution of charge on the atoms of halogens, carbon, which controls the formation of dipole moments at the transition point, leads to a shift of energy zones, and the formation of a potential barrier, that is, the formation of the internal 2D p-n transitions. Short CV of Prof. R.M. Balabai (Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, Ukraine) Ruslana Balabai was graduated from the Physics and Technology Faculty of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (Ukraine) in 1982 with the specialization of cryogenic electronics. She defended her Ph.D. Thesis at South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University (Odessa) in 1993, while degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences was obtained by her at Department of Physics and Teaching Methodology, the Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, in 2014. Her scientific researches are focused mainly on first principles calculations of condensed matter, novel electronic devices based on graphene, hybrid materials, thin granular metal films, vertical heterojunctions, superstructures, etc. Now Ruslana Balabai is a Professor at the Department of Physics and Teaching Methodology in the Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, Ukraine. She has organized there the scientific school "Realistic physical and chemical portraiture of nanoscale systems". Among the main tasks solved by the researchers of this school is the acquisition of new world-class knowledge of the atomic and electronic structure of solid-state nanoobjects. The material and technical base of this school is the author's complex of programs that implement modern methods of quantum solid state physics. The results of the school's work are obtained in the studies "Determination of Spatial Structure and Electronic Properties of Nanosized Solid State Functional Structures" supported by the general fund of the state budget since 2006. The obtained results were included in the defended dissertation Balabai R.M, Tarasova O.Yu., Merzlikin P.V., and Chernikova O.M. for obtaining the scientific degrees of the Doctor and Candidates of Physical and Mathematical Sciences within the specialty of Solid State Physics. R. Balabai has published 150 scientific papers (many of which were co-authored with students and post-graduate students), including publications in Applied Physics (A), Applied Nanoscience, Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics, Diamond & Related Materials, Radiation Measurements, Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, Ukrainian Physical Journal, Nanosystems, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies (Ukr.), Quantum Electronics and Optoelectronics (Ukr.), etc. Ruslana Balabai has participated in more than 60 international conferences.
