Taking the 31st-40th place among the higher education institutions of the New European countries, the University of Latvia (UL) also has the highest score among Latvian higher education institutions. This ranking compares 53 higher education institutions from 12 countries that have joined the European Union since 2004 (New Europe; universities in Malta did not make the list). The rating takes into account the following criteria: studies, scientific activity, citation, cooperation with industry, international cooperation, and prestige.

UL is one of the two Latvian higher education institutions that have completed this ranking, taking the 31st-40th place. Riga Technical University has ranked 41+. The highest rated university is the Tartu University of our neighbouring Estonia, while the Czech Republic is the most widely represented country in this ranking, with 13 Czech higher education institutions.
