Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) and University of Genova (UNIGE) participated in the European Big Data Value Forum 2024, held in Budapest, Hungary, from October 2-4, 2024. During the event, ISSP UL showcased a demonstrator of their innovative large-area, electrode-free optical tactile sensor, developed in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza, Saint Louis French-German Institute, and the University of Ljubljana within Sestosenso project. UNIGE showcased its invention Proxiskin - a novel sensory system based on miniaturized proximity and tactile sensors be integrated across the robot body, enabling unified perception of the environment.

Both inventions garnered significant attention and interest, as it represents a novel and unique solution in the field. Optoskin simplicity of operation is particularly remarkable, making it an intriguing breakthrough. Proxyskin seamlessly perceives the robot’s surroundings, treating proximity and tactile data as an extended sensing mode → skin-vision. These developments can make substantial contributions to areas such as cost-effective sensors and robotics, demonstrating the potential for impactful innovation in these competitive sectors.
